Operation Shingle

On this day, seventy-seven years ago, Allied aircraft dropped over 1,000 tons of bombs in an attempt to contain a German advance in Italy. The Allies had launched Operation Shingle, the invasion of Anzio, the prior month on January 22, 1944.
